Bengals Fall on Day One of Series with Wildcats


POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball fell in consecutive games to Weber State Friday afternoon in Pocatello. The Bengals (17-18, 1-4 BSC) dropped the first game 4-2 before having their comeback fall just short in game two losing 5-4.

Game one featured a pitching battle with neither team breaking the 0-0 tie until the fifth inning.

Haley Rainey pitched the first five innings of the game and Mareena Ramirez followed for the final two.

In the first five innings of the game, ISU forced Weber to strand 5 on base while Rainey dealt from the circle. The Wildcats were able to break the stalemate scoring three in the top of the 5th.

In the top of the sixth, the Wildcats put another run on the board to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bengals didn't give up, Ramirez in relief held the Wildcats hitless in the final two innings of the game to give the Bengals a chance to let the offense work.

Mailee Newman got the Bengals started with a single down the left field line. Gracie Smith came in afterwards to pinch run for her.

Skyler Sethman then stepped up to bat and hammered a homerun over left center cutting the Weber lead to 4-2.

The Bengals attempted to come back in the seventh but couldn't close the gap with Weber taking game one 4-2.

The Bengals scored two runs on seven hits. Sethman went two-for-three in the game. Newman went two-for-two.

Game two started hot for the Bengals. In the top of the first, Emma McMurray went Three up Three down with a strike out.

 In the bottom, Rheanne Lewis doubled down the left field line. Morgan Hess followed with a walk. With two on Angelica Cano slammed a double to left center scoring Lewis and giving the Bengals a 1-0 lead.

Skyler Sethman reached on a fielders choice then was caught in a rundown between second and first. Before the Wildcats could tag her, Cano crossed home scoring another run and giving the Bengals a 2-0 lead after one.

The Bengals held the wildcats scoreless in the second. In the top of the third, Weber tied the game on a two-run homerun over the left field fence.

Both teams continued the defensive battle through the sixth before Weber broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

The Wildcats put another two runs on the board in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead headed into the final half inning of the game.

The Bengals got on base with one out after Piper Tago was hit by a pitch in the seventh. Isabel Cargill followed it with a single and the runners advanced on an error by the Weber State centerfielder.

Rheanne Lewis reached on a fielders chose as Brook Richards, pinch running was caught in a rundown at home.

With two outs, Morgan Hess singles to left bringing home two runs to cut the Weber lead to 5-4. The Bengals were unable to complete the comeback and the game ended with the WSU 5-4 win.

McMurray in seven innings had five strikeouts and five runs allowed on seven Weber State hits.

The Bengals and Wildcats have one final game in the series Saturday, April 2. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
