Women's Basketball Falls to Cal Thursday Afternoon

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's basketball team (1-1) fell to the Cal Bears Thursday afternoon in Berkley, California as the Bears put together a dominant 88-36 win ovre the Bengals.

The Bears set the tone of the game from the first tip, jumping out to a 14-1 lead over the Bengals over the first five minutes of the game.

Nika Lokica made the first field goal of the game for the Bengals, a driving layup that also drew a foul from the Cal defender.

The Bengals wouldn't have another made field goal until four seconds left in the quarter when Bengal Freshman Aurora Elder pushed to the basket and hit the layup. The quarter ended with a 24-7 Cal Lead.

The 2nd quarter, while slow, was a more even matchup between the two teams. Idaho State outscored the Bears 12-11 in the period with triples from Halle Wright and Alyse Aby. The Bengals also cleaned up their turnovers in the period, committing just two while forcing five from the Bears. As the teams went into the locker room, the Bears held a 35-19 lead over the Bengals.

Cal came out of the break on fire, outscoring the Bengals 31-8 in the third shooting 64.7 percent from the floor. Halle Wright's 2nd trey of the night was a bright spot for the Bengals as the Bears began to run away with the game.

The final 10 minutes of the game, Cal continued the onslaught, holding the Bengals to just nine points from the floor. Maria Dias scored five of the nine, on two-of-three attempts. Sophia Covello hit her lone three of the game.

The Bears ended the game with the final 88-36 win over the Bengals.

Notes

·        The Bengals shot 13-58 from the field, 22.4 percent.

·        The 52 point margin is tied for the 5th largest margin of defeat in team history.

·        The 24 turnovers are the most for the Bengals since ISU vs Arizona State on 11/19/2023

·        The Bears held the Bengals to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters of the game

·        While the Bears won the rebound battle 44-35, the Bengals won the O-Board battle 18-13.
