SEATTLE, Washington – Idaho State women's soccer jumped out to an early lead behind a familiar name, but a second-half surge by the Redhawks handed the Bengals their first loss of the season in a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon at Championship Field.
Sophomore defender Talia Coury struck in the 18th minute to give ISU a 1-0 advantage, finishing cleanly off a setup from midfielder Mady Za. The goal was Coury's third of the season, continuing a red-hot start to the year for Coury.
The Bengals (2-1-2) controlled stretches of the first half with efficient possession and timely defending, and took a 1-0 lead into the break. But the momentum shifted quickly after halftime.
Seattle U (2-0-3) equalized in the 60th minute on a goal from Bella Bonnett, then added two more in the next six minutes as Kailee Wilson and Caroline Penner each found the back of the net to flip the match. Idaho State was limited to just one shot in the second half while the Redhawks racked up 13 after halftime.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wieler made six saves in 75 minutes of action before being relieved by Landyn Twitchell, who closed out the final 15 minutes in net and stopped another shot on frame.
Idaho State finished with seven total shots, including five on goal, but struggled to generate chances down the stretch as Seattle U controlled 59 percent possession and earned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Still, the Bengals return from their first road trip of the season with a 2-1-2 record, continuing their strongest start since 2012 and showing plenty of promise through the opening two weeks.
