MOSCOW, Idaho –
Idaho State (3-2-0) fell 4-1 to Idaho (1-2-2)  at the first contest of the Governor's Cup Friday night. The Bengals got on the scoreboard early with Amanda Ellsworth scoring 10:28 into the first half but the Vandals responded with four goals as the Bengals level of play dropped below their own standard.

“It was not a good performance for us,” said Head Coach Allison Gibson of the contest. “Obviously we came out strong and got that first goal. We started to execute what we were trying to do. From there, it obviously went downhill very quickly. It was very uncharacteristic of my team and that's what I'm most disappointed about. Yes the score, but more than that it was the way we performed, it wasn't to our standards that we hold for ourselves.”

The Bengals started strong with an early goal, 10:28 into play, scored by freshman forward Ellsworth. Ellsworth buried a rocket shot two yards out past the keeper off a rebound on goal shot by senior defender Megan Stainbrook.

Ellsworth collected the ball after Stainbrook took a 25 yard shot straight ahead that Idaho's keeper Marissa Fehrman blocked out of the goal. Ellsworth finished the combination for her fourth goal of the season.

Idaho responded 3:58 minutes later off an unlucky bounce. Idaho State keeper Carly Hutchings-Maloney came out to stop the shot in progress but the ball took an awkward bounce as she slid to stop it. Idaho's Bailey Hewitt passed off the ball to Lilly Archer who was in the clear and able to head the ball into the goal.

Archer returned the favor at the 22:51 mark, ripping a shot off the cross bar that ended up perfectly at the foot of Vandal Hewitt. Hewitt merely got her foot on the rebounded ball as Hutchings-Maloney was still falling to the ground from defending the high cross bar shot. Archer was credited with the assist.

Idaho was able to put its third goal away with 11 seconds left in the first period. Jill Flockhart punched a chip shot just outside the box over Hutchings-Maloney's outstretched hands, just under the crossbar.
Idaho State controlled the pace in the first half of the first period but the second half of that period was all Idaho. At the end of the first period the shots were tied at eight and ISU edged out the Vandals 3-to-2 on corner kicks.

The Bengals decided to shake things up by replacing Hutchings-Maloney with freshman keeper Maria Dela Cruz. Hutchings-Maloney had three saves in the first period while Dela Cruz had none in the second period.

"We've got to shore up our defense.  We've got to get our goalkeepers playing better.  It's a key position for us.  I think Carly did a good job for us it just wasn't her day and those are the kind of goals Maria's going to get scored on because of her height unfortunately so the goalkeeping is a tough position for us and we really have to sort out who's going to be that player for us in the future," said Gibson.

Chelsea Small scored her third goal of the season, tying Idaho's career record for goals at 24, off a deep 30 yard free kick over keeper Maria Dela Cruz's head at the 79:51 mark.

Junior forward Rachel Strawn tied Idaho's Small with a game-high four shots. Idaho only outshot the Bengals by one, 14-to-13.

Idaho State plays Boise State on Sunday, Aug. 4 at noon at Guy Wicks Field.

"We are going to have to watch this tape and completely regroup.  It was an emotional lost for us, that was the hard thing, they just didn't respond to adversity," said Gibson.  "We have to wipe the slate clean."
