POCATELLO, Idaho
– The Idaho State women's tennis team is now on a two-match winning streak after defeating Portland State 4-3 Saturday afternoon. The Bengals improve to 2-2 and 1-0 in conference action.

“We thought this was going to be a very close match,” ISU Head Coach Bobby Goeltz said. “Today we prevailed and I am very excited for this women's squad to be 2-2 after playing four good teams.”

The Bengals started the match out on the right foot, taking the doubles point after Katharina Marsela and Laura Porras defeated Portland State's Marti Pellicano and Megan Govi 8-3 at the No. 1 spot and Rilee Moorhead and Marian Tangarife defeated Marina Todd and Nayanatara Vadali 8-0 at the No. 2 position.

Idaho State's performance in the doubles portion of the match set the tone for the rest of the match. Porras defeated Pellicano 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and Moorhead took the No. 3 spot with a win over Govi, putting the Bengals just one point away from winning the contest.

Zamira Vasquez sealed the victory for Idaho State with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Portland State's Marina Todd.

“Zamira had the most interesting match of the day,” Goeltz said. “She played the same girl last year and lost in a super tie-breaker. This year she is a completely different player. She hung in there and kept fighting.”

The Idaho State men also competed today, taking on Nevada. The Bengals fell 4-1 to the Wolfpack. Freshman Krzyzstof Stempien won his singles competition at the No. 3 spot in three sets to defeat Nevada's Moez Echargui.

“I am not disspointed with the men's match today,” Goeltz said. “I think there is more potential in our team than meets the eye and the only way for them to reach that potential is to be challenged by talented teams and improve in match situations.”

The Idaho State men fell to 2-7 while Nevada improved to 4-4.

Women's tennis returns to action Sunday, Feb. 19 against Northern Arizona in Pocatello while the men play again on Sunday, Feb. 26 in Pocatello against NAU.
