POCATELLO, Idaho
– The Idaho State men are now 1-0 in conference play after defeating Portland State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at home. The Bengals improve to 2-4 on the overall season while PSU falls to 0-4 and 0-1.

ISU started off the match on the right foot, winning the doubles point with freshmen Krzyzstof Stempien and Austin Miller defeating Portland State's Nick Fracchia and Zach Lubek 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles. Seniors Dan Buckingham and Dakota Pate really drove it home, defeating PSU's Roman Margoulis and Abhinav Mishra 9-8 in a tiebreaker situation at the No. 2 spot.

“The No. 2 doubles was really the key match today,” ISU Head Coach Bobby Goeltz said. “If we had lost the doubles point, I think Portland State would have had a whole new attitude going into singles play.”

Idaho State carried its doubles success into singles action as the Bengals swept nearly every spot except for the No. 1 position.

Junior Nate Gross defeated Mishra 6-1, 6-2 while Stempien defeated Mitch Somach 6-4, 6-4. Buckingham defeated Alec Marx at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-4. With the match already being decided after Buckingham's win, Miller and Pate went on to win in their matches as well. Miller defeated Fracchia 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 while Pate downed Lubek 6-3, 6-4.

“Everything has been geared toward conference matches,” Goeltz said. “Today was a key match of the season. I am really proud of how they stepped up and I think we are where we want to be.”

Idaho State's women also competed today taking on Seattle in the opening match of the season. ISU fell to Seattle 8-0 in a four doubles and four singles layout. Senior Lauren Porras played an exciting match with Seattle's Farrar. After a hard-fought battle, Farrar eventually won the match 6-3, 4-6, 13-11.

The Idaho State men hit the court again Friday, Feb. 10 at Boise State. The match begins at 3:30 p.m. The women return to action Thursday, Feb. 9 against Utah State at home with play slated to begin at 3 p.m.
