OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference announced Monday that six ISU men's tennis players have been named to the conference spring all-academic team. The team members representing ISU are senior
Dan Buckingham (economics), juniors
Nate Gross (secondary education) and
Charles Norman (sociology) as well as freshmen
Andres Coello (mechanical engineering),
Austin Miller (electrical engineering) and
Krzysztof Stempien (finance).
Five of the six men are earning the first all-academic achievement of their careers with the exception of Gross who has been named to the conference all-academic team in 2011 and 2010 as well.
Six all-academic honorees is the most for the men's tennis program at ISU in the last five years with the team having just two in 2011, three in 2010, four in 2009 and two in 2008.
Buckingham and Gross led the Bengals this season at the No. 2 doubles with an impressive 11-8 record overall and 5-3 in league play.
The freshmen from the 2012 season performed well both off and on the court. Stempien led ISU in singles action with a 12-7 overall record at the No. 2-4 positions. He went an impressive 7-1 in Big Sky action and was an undefeated 3-0 at the No. 4 spot.
Coello had an impressive freshman season going 9-4 overall and 3-2 in conference action at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Miller was second to Stempien in conference singles play with a 5-3 record and went 8-9 overall during the season at the No. 4-6 positions.
To be eligible for the honor a student-athlete must have met or exceeded the following requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions. 2) Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the most recently completed term. 3) Completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky Institution.
