LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State women's tennis team dropped its opening match against Utah State Friday afternoon 7-0. The young squad composed of five freshmen, a sophomore and a junior fought hard against the Aggies Friday afternoon.
In doubles action, freshmen Wiebke Boiekmann and
Svenja Tegtmeier fell at the No. 1 position 8-1 while junior
Zamira Vasquez and sophomore
Marian Tangarife lost the No. 3 doubles 8-2.
In singles action, Bacon played a close contest with Utah State's Jaci West, falling 7-6, 7-5 while freshman
Madelyn Weltzin took her match at the No. 3 position to three sets, falling to USU's Julie Tukuafu 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Tegtmeier also took her match at the No. 5 singles to three sets. USU's Kallie Sperry defeated her 5-7, 7-5, 10-2. Boeckmann lost the No. 6 singles to Hillary Hays 6-4, 6-5 while Tangarife lost the No. 1 singles to McKenzie Davis 6-1, 6-0. Vasquez dropped the No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1 to Kristina Voytsekhovich.
“This is the most competitive we have been with Utah State in the last five or six years,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “The score doesn't quite reflect that but if you look at the individual match scores it is evident. Most importantly there is a change in this team's attitude this year. There is more competitiveness and confidence in this team than we have had in a while.”
The next women's match will be Friday, Feb. 1 against Seattle University at home in Reed Gym at 3 p.m. The Idaho State men take on Utah Saturday, Jan. 19 in Salt Lake City at 5 p.m. before facing Weber State Saturday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m.
