OGDEN, Utah – The Idaho State men's tennis team fell to 1-2 on the season after dropping a very close contest to league rival Weber State in a non-conference match-up. The Bengals lost the contest 4-3.
“Sometimes hustle and desire beat ability,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “These teams were pretty evenly matched but Weber State just wanted it more than we did. Jamey, Christian and Austin played very well. I hadn't planned on playing Christian at the No. 1 spot until next week but with Charles being out we decided to let him see what it was all about.”
Idaho State's young players came out with the wins against the Wildcats, headlined by freshman
Christian Marian defeating WSU's Todd Fought 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot.
Fellow freshman
Jamey Swiggart also recorded a 7-5, 7-5 singles win at the No. 4 position against Sanjay Goswami.
Marian and Swiggart are both a team-leading 2-1 in singles and doubles action so far this season.
Sophomore
Austin Miller won the No. 6 singles in three sets against WSU's Ryan Garner. Miller won the first set 6-2 and dropped the second set 6-4. Miller fought back to win the tiebreaker 10-7.
Weber State swept the doubles competition, giving the Wildcats the pivotal fourth point and the match win.
Idaho State returns to the court in Pocatello for a contest with conference foe Montana Friday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. The squad then takes a short break before beginning Big Sky play against Portland State Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m.
