Idaho State women's and men's tennis begin conference play this weekend. The Bengal women take on Eastern Washington Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m. at home in Reed Gym. The Bengal men face Portland State Feb. 16 at 10:00 a.m. at home in Reed Gym.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BENGALS
The Idaho State men's tennis team fell to 1-2 on the season after dropping a very close contest, 4-3, to league rival Weber State in a non-conference match-up on Jan. 20. Idaho State's young players came out with the wins against the Wildcats, headlined by freshman
Christian Marian, freshman
Jamey Swiggart, and sophomore
Austin Miller.
Idaho State women traveled to the Boise State Tournament where they faced Boise State and Idaho. The Bengals fell to both teams 7-0. Freshman
Kasey Bacon played both matches at the No. 1 spot.
BENGAL RETURNERS
ISU's two seniors on the men's side this year are
Nate Gross (Sebastopol, Calif.) and
Charles Norman (Durban, South Africa). Gross went 9-10 in singles last season at the No. 2 position and went 11-8 in doubles play. Norman played at the No. 1 spot and finished 1-18 in singles and 1-7 at the No. 1 doubles spot. ISU also returns a sophomore class with a lot of experience in
Krzysztof Stempien (Lodz, Poland),
Austin Miller (Eagle, Idaho) and
Andres Coello (Guayaquil, Ecuador).
The Bengal women return sophomore
Marian Tangarife (Bogota, Columbia) and junior
Zamira Vasquez (Sorrento, Columbia). Tangarife went 6-11 last season at the No. 4 singles spot while Vasquez finished 5-9 at the No. 5 position.
BENGAL NEW COMERS
Freshmen
Jamey Swiggart (Steamboat, Colo.) began the season in No. 5 position where he defeated Sean Levesque of Utah State. Swiggart has moved to the No. 4 position, defeating Sanjay Goswami of Weber State. Freshman
Christian Marian (Frankfurt, Germany) started the season in the No. 2 postion where he defeated Marcus Fritz of Utah State. Marian has moved up to play at the No. 1 postion, where he has defeated Todd Fought of Weber State.
ISU's women's team welcomes five freshmen to the squad including,
Wiebke Boeckmann (Kamen, Germany),
Kasey Bacon (Bountiful, Utah),
Svenja Tegtmeier (Oldenburg, Germany),
Laura Theus (Berlin, Germany) and
Madelyn Weltzin (Boise, Idaho).
PRESEASON POLL
The Bengal men finished fifth with 66 points with Sacramento State picked first (99), Montana were picked second (91), Eastern Washington picked third (74), and Weber chosen fourth (68).
The Bengal women finished eighth with 37 points and were selected above Portland State (28), North Dakota (27) and Southern Utah (11).
ABOUT EASTERN WASHINGTON
The Bengal women have faced Eastern Washington nine times, only defeating the Eagles once on April 3, 2004.
ABOUT PORTLAND STATE
The Bengal men have faced Portland State five times. ISU leads the series 3-2. The last meeting between these two teams was Feb. 5, 2012, where ISU defeated PSU 6-1.
