Idaho State men's and women's tennis continue conference play this weekend at home. The Bengal men take on Eastern Washington on Friday, Feb. 22, at 3:00 p.m. in Reed Gym. The Bengal women face Portland State on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 10:00 a.m. in Reed Gym.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BENGALS
Idaho State men's tennis opened Big Sky Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 16, by defeating Portland State, 6-1, at home. The Bengal men now advance to 2-2 on the season. The Bengals won the doubles point and victories came from the freshmen team of
Christian Marian and
Jamey Swiggart and sophomore team of
Krzysztof Stempien and
Andres Coello.
Idaho State women's tennis opened Big Sky Conference play at home on Friday, Feb. 15, against Eastern Washington. The Bengals played a hard match but ultimately fell to the Eagles 5-2. The two ISU points came from freshmen
Kasey Bacon and Wiebke Boelkmann singles victories. Bacon defeated Chelsea Patton in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3. Boelkmann overcame Alexis Filliol in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 7-6.
BENGAL NEW COMERS
Freshmen
Jamey Swiggart began the season in No. 5 position where he defeated Sean Levesque of Utah State. In the No. 4 position, Swiggart overcame Sanjay Goswami of Weber State. Swiggart continues to show great progress with the Bengals as he beat Lukas Kortus, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 5 position, for his third singles victory of the season. Freshman
Christian Marian started the season in the No. 2 position where he defeated Marcus Fritz of Utah State. Marian moved up to play at the No. 1 position, where he beat Todd Fought of Weber State and Antoine Bechmann of Portland State.
ISU's women's team welcomes five freshmen to the squad including,
Wiebke Boeckmann,
Kasey Bacon,
Svenja Tegtmeier,
Laura Theus and
Madelyn Weltzin.
Kasey Bacon has played in the No. 1 position and defeated Chelsea Patton of Eastern Washington in the No. 2 spot.
PRESEASON POLL
The Bengal men finished fifth with 66 points with Sacramento State picked first (99), Montana were picked second (91), Eastern Washington picked third (74), and Weber chosen fourth (68).
The Bengal women finished eighth with 37 points and were selected above Portland State (28), North Dakota (27) and Southern Utah (11).
ABOUT EASTERN WASHINGTON
The Bengal men have faced Eastern Washington eleven times. The most recent match Eastern Washington defeated the Bengals 7-0. The last Idaho State win against the Eagles was April 27, 2008, where ISU won 4-1.
ABOUT PORTLAND STATE
The Bengal women have faced Portland State seven times. Idaho State leads the series, 4-3. In the most recent match the Bengals defeated Portland State 4-3 on Feb. 18, 2012.
