POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State men's tennis continued Big Sky Conference play by defeating Eastern Washington Friday at home 7-0. This is the first time since 2008 the Bengal men have beaten Eastern Washington. Today's match was the first time since 2004 the Bengals defeated a conference opponent 7-0. ISU advances to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
“Today's match was as good of a win as we have had in years,” Idaho State Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “We could sense confidence in the team as a whole. This win was an entire team effort. Down the road if we continue to have success, you can attribute the turning point to today.”
ISU started the match off with the double point with victories from the senior team of
Nate Gross and
Charles Norman in the No. 1 spot and sophomore team of Krysztof Stempien and
Andres Coello in the No. 3 position. Gross and Norman defeated Joseph Cohen and Edundo Martinez 8-2. Stempien and Coello overcame Arturo Carpio and Eduardo Bringold 8-7 and won the tiebreaker 7-3.
In singles action, five Bengal players are now 2-0 in conference play.
Christian Marian played a hard match but ultimately defeated Eduardo Martinez in the No. 1 spot 7-6, 6-1. Norman beat Tomas Aranguiz in the No. 2 position 6-4, 6-2.
Stempien overcame Kyle Koejie in the No. 3 spot 6-4, 6-2. Gross defeated Eduardo Bringold in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-1.
Swiggart played a tough match in the No. 5 spot, defeating Luke Thompson in the tiebreaking set 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.
Austin Miller overcame Arturo Carpio in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-1.
“Austin really stepped it up today,” Goeltz said. “He seemed more relaxed and more confident.”
The Bengal men return to Big Sky Conference action when they face Weber State at home on Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. ISU women's tennis face Portland State at home on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m.
