Idaho State Men Down Weber State, Improve to 3-0 in Big Sky

The Bengals defeated Weber State for the first time since 2006

Sophomore Krzyszstof Stempien helped clinch a win for ISU against Weber State Saturday.

POCATELLO, Idaho
- ISU men's tennis defeated conference rival Weber State Saturday 5-2. This is the first time the Bengals have defeated Weber State since Feb. 14, 2006. ISU's win breaks a 13-match losing streak to the Wildcats and ISU is now 11-13 against WSU. It is the first time that Idaho State has started Big Sky play 3-0. (All-time results cover 2003-12).

“It was an incredibly hard fought match today,” ISU Head Coach Bobby Goeltz said. “We battled hard for every point and I am incredibly proud of how positive and focused this team has been.”

The Bengals were able to clinch the doubles point with victories in the No.1 and No.3 spots. The senior team of Charles Norman and Nate Gross and sophomore team of Krzysztof Stempien and Andres Coello defeated their opponents to gain the point.

In singles action, Jamey Swiggart overpowered Sanjay Goswami in the No.5 spot 6-1, 7-5. Nate Gross fought to overcome Caio Poitena in the No 4 position 6-2, 3-6, 7-4.

Stempien played a tough match against Oliver Good in the No. 3 position. At this point in the match the Bengals were up 3-2. In the tight match, Good had a chance to win with a match point opportunity but Stempien kept fighting and ultimately defeated Good in the tie break match, 6-4, 5-7, 8-6. Stempien's point clinched the victory for the Bengals.

Austin Miller was still in the midst of his match against Ryan Garner when the Bengals learned they earned the victory over the Wildcats. Miller stayed focused and was able to overcome Garner in the No. 6 spot, 7-6, 6-7, 10-7.

Christian Marian played against Jakub Gewert in the No.1 position but ultimately fell in the tie-break match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Norman was defeated by Todd Fought in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-2.

The ISU men will play at home when they face Sacramento State, March 17, at 3 p.m.
