Bengal Tennis Goes 3-0 in First Day of Las Vegas Tournament

Idaho State notches wins over Southern Utah and Western New Mexico

Freshman Jamey Swiggart won his seventh straight match and improved to 8-1 in singles play Saturday with wins over SUU and WNMU.

LAS VEGAS, Nev.
– Idaho State tennis went 3-0 in the first day of the Las Vegas Tournament Saturday. The ISU men defeated Southern Utah 7-0 and Western New Mexico 6-1 while the ISU women picked up their second win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Western New Mexico.
 
Against SUU, ISU won the doubles point handedly with both the No.1 and No. 2 duos defeating the Thunderbirds 8-0. The No. 3 duo of sophomores Krzysztof Stempien and Andres Coello defeated Christensen and Olcott 8-1.
 
The Bengals also swept the singles play with no match going past two sets.
 
The Bengal men defeated Western New Mexico 6-1 and freshman Jamey Swiggart extended his win streak in singles play to seven as he improves to 8-1 on the season.
 
With an 8-5 doubles win over the Mustangs, Stempien and Coello improve to 8-1 on the season in doubles action and have won six straight. Seniors Nate Gross and Charles Norman follow them with five straight wins and a 6-2 doubles record.
 
The Idaho State women earned their second win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Western New Mexico.
 
The Bengals won the doubles point with all three doubles teams getting the win. Sophomore Marian Tangarife and freshman Laura Theus won the No. 1 position 9-7 while freshmen Wiebke Boeckmann and Svenja Tegtmeier won the No. 2 doubles 8-6. Freshmen Madelyn Weltzin and Kasey Bacon won the No. 3 doubles 8-3. Bacon and Weltzin's win was their second straight and the duo now leads ISU with a 2-2 doubles record on the season.
 
Idaho State secured the win in the match with wins in the 2-6 singles positions.
 
Tangarife won the No. 2 singles 6-0, 7-5 while Tegtmeier won the No. 3 singles in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. Weltzin and Theus won the No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Zamira Vasquez wrapped up the match with a win at the No. 6 position, defeating WNMU's Berberic 6-2 in both sets.
 
The Idaho State women take on Western New Mexico again Sunday while the men face UNLV Monday and Youngstown State Tuesday.
