ISU Tennis Preps for SUU, NAU Conference Match-ups

Idaho State women's tennis also faces Texas Pan-American this week

ISU tennis travels to Cedar City, Utah and Flagstaff, Ariz., this week.

ABOUT IDAHO STATE

The Idaho State tennis programs travel to Cedar City, Utah and Flagstaff, Ariz., this week. The ISU men (8-3, 4-0) take on SUU Thursday at 10 a.m. and Northern Arizona Sunday, March 31 at 3 p.m. Both contests are conference match-ups.

Idaho State women's tennis (4-8, 1-3) faces Southern Utah Thursday, March 28 at 1 p.m. and then travels to Flagstaff for a neutral contest against Texas Pan-American Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m. The team also faces NAU Saturday, March 30 at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BENGALS
ISU tennis went 6-1 at the Las Vegas Tournament with the Idaho State women winning three straight. The women defeated Western New Mexico in back-to-back contests 6-1 and also earned their first program win over Seattle in a 5-2 decision Tuesday.

The ISU men defeated Southern Utah 7-0 and Western New Mexico 6-1 Saturday. The Bengals lost to No. 71 UNLV 7-0 Monday and wrapped up the tournament with a win over Youngstown State 6-1 Tuesday.

BENGAL LEADERS
Freshman Jamey Swiggart leads the Bengals with a 9-2 singles record and is 6-1 at the No. 5 position. He is followed by sophomore Austin Miller with a 7-3 singles record. Miller is 5-2 at the No. 6 position and 2-1 at the No. 5 spot.
 
In doubles action, sophomores Andres Coello and Krzysztof Stempien boast an 8-3 record and are  7-1 at the No. 3 position. The duo is 4-0 in conference play.

On the women's side, freshman Kasey Bacon leads ISU with a 5-7 singles record. She is 5-1 at the No. 2 position. She is followed by sophomore Marian Tangarife (4-8), freshman Madelyn Weltzin (4-8) and freshman Laura Theus (4-6).
 
Bacon and Weltzin lead the Bengals with a 3-3 doubles record. The duo is 3-1 at the No. 3 position.

NORMAN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
On March 19, the Big Sky Conference announced senior Charles Norman had been named Big Sky Player of the Week. Norman was the first ISU player since 2009 to be named POTW. Javier Royo had been the previous Bengal to earn the weekly honor. Norman and doubles partner, Nate Gross, defeated No. 80 ranked Malko and Marksoo of Sacramento State before Norman went on to defeat Malko at the No. 2 singles.

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH AND SERIES HISTORY
Southern Utah's men are 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in Big Sky play. ISU leads the all-time series 1-0 after defeating SUU 7-0 last week at the Las Vegas Tournament.

SUU's women are 6-5 overall and 1-2 in conference action. Idaho State leads the series 4-2 and the Bengals are 4-1 in Cedar City, Utah. Idaho State won the last contest 5-2 at SUU March 27, 2012.

ABOUT TEXAS PAN-AMERICAN AND SERIES HISTORY
The Texas Pan-American women are 3-9 overall and have won two straight. Wanda Beguelin leads the Broncos with a 9-13 singles record.

Idaho State leads the all-time series against UTPA 1-0 after winning the last contest on March 7, 2003 in a 6-1 decision.

ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA AND SERIES HISTORY
The NAU men are 4-13 on the season and 0-3 in Big Sky Conference action. Robert Martin leads in singles with a 7-8 record. Dominic Bermudez and Patrick Schimmelbauer lead in doubles with a 6-1 record at the No. 2 position.

Northern Arizona leads the all-time series 6-3 and the Bengals are 0-3 in Flagstaff. Idaho State won the last contest 4-3 in Pocatello on Feb. 26, 2012.

NAU's women are 10-8 overall and 3-1 in conference action. Nicole Perez leads the Lumberjacks 12-6 in singles action. Alice Pacaut and Malia Wahnepio lead in doubles with a 12-3 record at the No. 3 position.

The Lumberjacks lead the series 10-0 and Idaho State is 0-3 at NAU. Northern Arizona won the last contest 7-0 at ISU on Feb. 19, 2012.
