FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The ISU men's tennis team downed Northern Arizona 4-3 Saturday morning, earning the program's first ever win in Flagstaff and improving to a perfect 6-0 in the Big Sky. The Bengals are now 10-3 overall on the season and ISU's 10 wins on the season marks the first 10-win season for the Bengals since the 2005-06 season.
ISU won the doubles point as seniors
Charles Norman and
Nate Gross defeated NAU's Kester Black and Shaun Waters 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles. Sophomores
Krzysztof Stempien and
Andres Coello followed up with an 8-5 win over Robert Martin and Trevor Unger. Stempien and Coello now led Idaho State with a 10-3 singles record and are now 5-0 in conference match-ups.
In singles play, Norman won the No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1 over Waters to give Idaho State its second point.
Freshman
Jamey Swiggart improved to 11-2 in singles play and 6-0 in Big Sky action with a win at the No. 5 position. He defeated Black 6-3, 6-0.
Sophomore
Austin Miller earned Idaho State's winning point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alan Barrios at the No. 6 position. The win improves Miller to 9-3 on the season and 5-1 in Big Sky contests.
“This match has worried me for weeks,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “I knew NAU was better than their record suggested. They have a very good coach and we were going to be playing at a high elevation. I think this win shows how dangerous this team is. This year definitely has the potential to be very special.”
ISU's women also played Northern Arizona Saturday and lost 6-1.
Freshman
Kasey Bacon earned Idaho State's lone point in the match with a win over NAU's Johanna Vang 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 position. Bacon is now leading the Bengals with a 6-8 singles record and she is 4-2 in Big Sky action.
Sophomore
Marian Tangarife nearly had a win at the No. 1 singles taking NAU's Ghizelene Doballah to three sets and falling 3-6, 6-4, 0-1.
“The women's team is playing so much better than it was in February,” Goeltz said. “They are working hard, improving and really buying in. They are way ahead of our expectations and to have come back to win against Weber State and Seattle after losing to them earlier in the season is huge. We played NAU tough and NAU is very good team.”
Idaho State's women are now 4-10 on the season and 1-5 in Big Sky contests.
Idaho State's men next face North Dakota and Northern Colorado at home in Pocatello Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 respectively. ISU women face Texas Pan American tomorrow at 9 a.m.
