Idaho State Tennis Defeats North Dakota in Conference Contests

ISU men defeat UND 7-0 and remain undefeated in the Big Sky

ISU men's tennis defeated North Dakota 7-0 Friday and are still undefeated in Big Sky action.

POCATELLO, Idaho
- Idaho State men's and women's tennis teams achieved conference victories Friday over North Dakota. The men's team remains undefeated in conference play after defeating UND 7-0 and is one step closer to a Big Sky regular season title, the first for the program since 1990. ISU women's tennis overcame UND 5-2. The women improve to 5-11 on the season and 2-5 in Big Sky play.
 
The Bengal men won the doubles point. Victories came from the senior team of Charles Norman and Nate Gross and sophomore team of Krzysztof Stempien and Andres Coello. Norman and Gross defeated Josh Oothoudt and Connor Oberle in the No. 1 position 8-3. Stempien and Coello overcame Will Biernat and Joe Lee in the No. 3 spot 8-3. Coello and Stempien are now 7-0 in conference doubles and 11-3 overall.
 
Freshman Jamey Swiggart leads the Bengals in singles play, improving to 12-2 on the season and 7-0 against conference opponents. Swiggart defeated Biernat in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-4. Swiggart is followed by sophomore Austin Miller who advanced to 10-3 in singles play with his victory over Joe Lee in the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-4.
 
Freshman Christian Marian defeated Josh Oothoudt in the No. 1 spot 7-6, 7-6. Norman improved to 8-4 on the season overcoming Conner Oberle in the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-0. Stempien overcame Ryan McGuigan in the No. 3 spot 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Gross defeated Grant Bakke in the No. 4 position 6-2, 6-2.
 
“UND is a better team that I thought but our guys are playing very confidently right now,” ISU Head Coach Bobby Goeltz said. “I thought Christian played a very tough match and we did well in doubles. Overall the guys played very well. Tomorrow will be the key match of the weekend for us.”
 
The Bengal women gained the doubles point with victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 spot. Freshmen Svenja Tegtmeier and Wiebke Boeckmann defeated Megan Sween and Sarah Stejskal in the No. 2 position 8-2. In the No. 3 spot, freshmen Madelyn Weltzin and Kasey Bacon improved to 5-5 on the season when they overpowered Stephanie Biehn and Mindy Lawrence 8-2.
 
Sophomore Marian Tangarife overcame Stephanie Petsis in the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 and Weltzin defeated Megan Sween in the No. 4 position 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Laura Theus overpowered Sarah Stejskal in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-4. Boeckmann advanced to 5-5 in the season when her victory over Mindy Lawrence in the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-0.
 
“I think this was a very good win for the women,” Goeltz said. “Marian played her heart out and had a great match. The women are at five wins already this season and are definitely improving almost every match. UNC will be a tough challenge for them tomorrow.”
 
Idaho State continues conference play Saturday, April 13 when the two squads face Northern Colorado at home. The women's match is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the men's match following at 1 p.m.
