POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team lost its home opener against Weber State 5-2 Saturday at Reed Gym.
The Bengals got off to a great start when they won the doubles point 2-0.
At No. 3 doubles Idaho State's 
Daniel Loebel and 
Bjorn Scheepbouwer defeated Ryan Garner and Caio Poitena 6-4.
Just moments later ISU's 
Austin Miller and 
Jamey Swiggart  defeated Jakub Gewert and Todd Fought  6-4  to give ISU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Weber State flipped the script in the singles competition.
At No. 1 Gewert made quick work of Swiggart 6-1, 6-2 to tie the score at 1-1.
At No. 4 Poitena defeated Goodwin 6-4, 6-5(6) to give WSU their first lead at 2-1.
The No. 3 match finished shortly after with Oliver Good defeating Miller 6-5(6), 6-3 to give WSU a 3-1 lead.
With just one point remaining to a WSU victory a hard-fought match was going on at No. 2. Fought won the first set 6-5(4) but Stempien won the second set 6-3. Stempian held a 5-4 lead in the third set but Fought battled to force a tiebreaker. Stempian took a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker but Fought went on a 6-1 run to win the tiebreaker and clinch the win for WSU at 4-1.
The No. 5 match was a quick WSU win. Landon Barlow defeated Loebel 6-0, 6-2 to give WSU the 5-1 lead.
The team match was decided but Scheepbouwer didn't stop battling and won easily over Sanjay Goswami 6-2, 6-4 for the final score of 5-2.
The Bengals fall to 0-2 on the season. The Wildcats are now 1-2 on the season.
The Bengals have a big break before facing North Dakota in Grand Forks N.D., in their first conference match on February, 21.
