Bengals Fall 6-1 at Utah State in First Match of Spring Season

LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Utah State Saturday afternoon it its first match of the 2016 spring season. The lone ISU point came from senior Svenja Tegtmeier who defeated USU's Ekaterina Tugarinova 7-6, (7-5), 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position.

"Svenja played so mentally tough," Head Coach Gretchen Maloney said. "She has worked hard on spin to improve her consistency and it's very effective."

Despite the 6-1 outcome, Maloney was very pleased with ISU's (0-1) performance in the first match of the season. The Bengals sent all but two singles matches to three sets.

"It was just a great match," Maloney said. "The girls fought hard in every match. We are starting to believe that we can play with anyone. We just need to sharpen up a few things and improve our consistency. The girls all have unique styles and are executing well."

Utah State improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.

The Bengals are back in action Feb. 2 as they host Weber State at 2 p.m. at Reed Gym.
