POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's basketball team returns to the floor Thursday, Dec. 29 after a short break for the holidays. The Bengals are set to face Montana in at 7 p.m. at the ICCU Court at Reed Gym to kick off conference play.
SCOUTING MONTANA
Montana closed out nonconference play with a 3-8 record and picked up wins against Great Falls, Incarnate Word and Rocky Mountain. The Griz finished nonconference play averaging 52.4 points and 39.7 points per game shooting 32.2 from the floor.
The Griz are led by redshirt freshman Taylor Goligoski at an even 12.0 points per game which ranks 18th in the Big Sky. Including Goligoski, six Griz average at least five points a game. Prior to injuring her hand, junior Mekayla Isaak led the squad in rebounding at 8.8 per contest, but since her injury the Griz have been led by Rachel Staudacher at 4.5 per contest.
Montana has struggled early this season with 11 underclassmen and season-ending injuries to its two leading scorers and lone seniors, Kayleigh Valley and Alycia Sims. The Griz currently rank last in the BSC in scoring offense but rank third in scoring defense as they have limited their opponents to just 62.8 points per game so far this season.
The Griz are led by Head Coach Shannon Schweyen who is in her first year as head coach after 24 seasons as an assistant. Schweyen replaced Robin Selvig following his retirement and is the first new head coach for Montana since 1978-79.
SERIES REVIEW
Montana leads the overall series 70-8 and has won the last eight contests. In the last meeting on Feb. 25, 2016, the Griz bested the Bengals 62-47 in Missoula, Mont.
BENGAL BITES
Currently, Idaho State ranks in the top five in the conference in eight statistical categories: scoring defense (4th), field goal percentage defense (4th), rebounding defense (1st), rebounding margin (2nd), blocked shots (4th), offensive rebounds (2nd), defensive rebounding percentage (4th) and offensive rebounding percentage (2nd).
Sophomore guard
Grace Kenyon leads the Bengals in both scoring (11.5 points per game) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game). She ranks 20th in the conference in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Freshman guard
Estefania Ors ranks 27th among the conference in scoring at 9.4 points per game.
Idaho State is on its longest win streak of the season at four games, and its longest win streak since winning five-straight last season from March 2 to March 11.
