BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Idaho State men's tennis team bested Montana State 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman, Mont.
Idaho State (11-8, 6-4 BSC) fell behind early as Montana State (5-12, 4-3 BSC) took the doubles point early.
Francis Filipovich and
Quentin Wacquez put ISU in front with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Bobcats tied it up with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. With the doubles point on the line, MSU's Rok Sitar and Alexander Flink bested
Sebastian Edin and
Josh Goodwin 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, Idaho State won four of six matches to seal the win. Montana State took the first singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, but the Bengals rattled off four-straight wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 1 and No. 5 singles to take a 4-2 advantage in the match. Wacquez started things off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles while
Francis Filipovich followed it up with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Sebastian Edin continued the winning streak with a battle at No. 1 singles, besting MSU's Kellen Bates 7-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and
Bjorn Scheepbouwer closed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5.
"Today was a true team effort after a tough loss yesterday against Montana," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "We found ourselves down 1-0 after losing the doubles point, but the guys came out and played great singles. It started off with a dominant performance by Quentin, followed with gutsy performances by Sebastian and Francis, and Bjorn closing out the match for us under enormous pressure for a fantastic team win."
The Bengals sit in sixth place in the Big Sky conference standings with one match to go in regular-season play. Idaho State holds a two-match lead over Weber State and face the Wildcats at home April 18 at 2 p.m.
