POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State soccer fell to the Weber State Wildcats 4-2 Sunday afternoon in Pocatello.
Coach Downey on the Match
The match was a tale of two halves. WSU controlled the first half, scoring three goals on four shots and taking the 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bengals came out of the locker room with renewed vigor, controlling possession of the ball in midfield and the defensive back line keeping the wildcats off of the ball.
What was notable was the increase in the Bengal's offense.
After only recording three shots in the first half, the Orange and Black had 11 in the second.
Facing a 3-0 deficit and none of their chances coming full circle, the Bengals finally connected in the 78th minute. Karlin Wurlitzer took a free kick from 40 yards out, instead of sending it into the box, Wurlitzer passed it to Taylin Butterbaugh who hit a rocket from 30 yards out that slid past the Weber keeper in the right side of the box, cutting the lead to 3-1.
The Bengals kept pressing, forcing multiple corners off of the Wildcats, finally in the 87th minute the Bengals set piece practice paid off.
Jordyn Roth had taken the Bengal's corners all day, giving the Bengals multiple opportunities for goals that kept coming up just short.
This time though, Roth placed the ball perfectly into the middle of the box, allowing Tryne Taminga to pass the ball to ISU freshman Emerson Grafton who booted it off of her right foot to the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
The Wildcats were able to sneak a final goal in the waning minutes of the match, and after 90 minutes Weber had the 4-2 victory.
