Bengals Take Control Early, Defeat the UNC Bears 58-50

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State Bengals (6-7, 1-1) battled to a 58-50 win over the Northern Colorado Bears Saturday afternoon in Reed Gym.
 
Tasia Jordan hit a fastbreak layup off of a Piper Carlson Steal with 7:42 left in the first period to take a 4-2 lead over the Bears. The Bengals never looked back, holding the lead for the remainder of the game. The Bears were able to close the deficit to one point in the third but the Bengal defense held strong and Idaho State re-extended its lead.

Tasia Jordan started the game on fire for the Bengals in the first period. Jordan hit five of six field goals and a three-pointer to finish the quarter with 11 points.
 
As a team, the Bengals shot 44.4 percent in the first as Idaho State took an eight point 22-14 lead over the Bears at the end of the first.
 
The second quarter became more of a grind for the Bengals, their shooting percentage stayed high at 41.7 percent, but ISU only made five field goals in the 2nd as the Bears outscored the Bengals 16-11 in the period.
 
At the end of the first half, the Bengals led 33-30 over Northern Colorado. Jordan led the way for the Bengals in the first 20, scoring 13 points on six-of-seven shooting. Bengal freshman Aurora Elder, showed offensive production on the floor, hitting two field goals and two free throws to finish the half with six.
 
The third quarter was a battle, Idaho State only shot 33.3 percent from the floor and the Bears 29.4 percent. Both teams had 10+ rebounds in the period and UNC edged out the Bengals 6-5 on o-boards. Piper Carlson continued to lead the batte on the glass for the Bengals grabbing four in the quarter to bring her game total up to 12.
 
The Bengals hit clutch shots in the fourth quarter when It mattered. With 4:16 to play, Sophia Covello extended the Bengals lead to eight with a three-pointer. Elder then got it done on both ends of the court, blocking a UNC shot attempt under the basket and making the layup on the other end of the court to put the Bengals up 10.
 
In the last minute of the game, extended by 5 combined called timeouts, Ruby Sweeney-Spitzec went to the line multiple times and hit her free throws, maintaining the divide and closing out the game for the Bengals.

  • The Bengals 10 blocked shots are the most in a single game since the 2020-21 season.
  • Tasia Jordan's 6 blocked shots are the most for a Bengal since Anna Policicchio's 8 against Seattle in 2015
  • The Bengals gave up 16 turnovers to the UNC's 13, but scored 17 points off of those turnovers while UNC scored just nine.
  • Piper Carlson had a career-high 14 rebounds in the win, the most single game rebounds for a Bengal since the 2023 season.
  • Three bengals scored in double figures. Jordan led with 15, Spink had her second consecutive double-digit game with 10 and Dias scored 10. Dias has now scored in double figures four out of the past five games for ISU.
