POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho State Softball continued its hot streak in dramatic fashion Friday morning, taking down the No. 13 team in the country Texas Tech 3-2 with a walk-off homerun.
Sophomore pitcher Lizzy Tommasini pitched a complete game and held the Red Raiders to just two runs scored in seven innings.
The Bengals struck first, taking advantage of two Texas Tech fielding errors, Belle Navarrete made it safely home to put the Bengals up 1-0.
The Red Raiders would score the next two runs of the game, one in the 5th and one in the 6th, taking a one-run lead headed into the bottom of the 6th.
The Bengals needed a spark if they wanted to keep in the game, Alyssa Yee provided it. On the second pitch of her at bat, Yee smashed a ball to deep right field, and putting her foot on the gas, sped through the bases for a triple.
Ava Brown then stepped up to the plate and swung hard, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field and scoring Yee, tying the game at 2-2.
Tommasini and the Bengal defense had the Red Raiders on the ropes in the top of the 7th, with a TTU runner in scoring position, the Bengals took care of business, getting a fielders choice out followed by a dart to home plate, Jenna Kearns secured the ball, made the tag and sent the Red Raiders back to the dugout without a run scored.
The Bengals came up to bat with the chance to win the game. It only took one pitch. Gracie Smith came up swinging and, on the first pitch, made solid contact with the ball and sent it flying over the right-field wall for the walk-off.
The Bengals defeated the #13 Texas Tech Red Raiders, the first top-15 win in ISU Softball program history.
Tommasini earned her second win of the season, holding TTU to two runs, with three strikeouts, forcing seven flyouts and eight groundouts.
The Bengals continue the A&M Tournament taking on George Washington at 1:00 PM MT.
