Bengals Open Home Play 2-0

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Bengals women's tennis team continued their 2025 season by opening their home schedule with a doubleheader against Colorado Mesa over the weekend. The first on Saturday, and the second on Sunday.

Idaho State would come out strong in the doubles matches on day one, earning a 3-0 sweep over the Mavericks to earn the doubles point.

DOUBLES
Morris/Day (ISU) def. Rodriguez/Brilhante (CMU) 6-1
Shalakhova/Zarovna (ISU) def. Livingston/Maier (CMU) 7-6 (7-2)
Grymalska/Mikkelson (ISU) def. Ballon Marin/Steur (CMU) 6-2

Idaho State didn't let up there, coming out hot in singles play and earning a perfect 6-0 sweep, winning all 6 singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-0 win over the Mavericks on day 1.

SINGLES
Asem Shoybek (ISU) def. Makenna Livingston (CMU) 6-4, 6-2
Stefanya Shalakhova (ISU) def. Devyn Rodriguez (CMU) 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)
Millie Day (ISU) def. Delia Maier (CMU) 6-0, 6-0
Sydney Morris (ISU) def. C. Ballon Marin (CMU) 6-0, 6-0
Olivia Mikkelson (ISU) vs. Jade Brilhante (CMU) 6-1, 6-4
Victoria Grymalska (ISU) vs. Kayla Huish (CMU) 6-3, 6-1

After clinching the victory, the Bengals would return to the court the next morning take on CMU for match number two.

In doubles the Mavericks would come out swinging, taking the victory in the #1 doubles match, however, the Bengals pairings on #2 & #3 would come through to earn the doubles point for ISU.

In singles play the Bengals would look strong throughout, earning the win in 5 of their 6 singles matches, and taking the match, 6-1.

"Overall, it has been pretty clean play from the team," said senior, Sydney Morris. "Millie and I have complemented each other's game very well, and I felt like we took care of business this weekend. I felt like the team did a great job overall, we fought really hard in both matches."

When asked about some tough opponents on the Bengals' schedule coming up, Morris replied, "We are going to fight in every match, we know Utah and BYU are tough teams, but we know we have put in the work and will be ready for the challenge."

The Bengals will improve to 3-1 overall after a perfect 2-0 weekend of play, and opening their home schedule 2-0.

"We are feeling solid after the two wins, the girls really worked on some things, and did the right things at the right time. They all played well this weekend", said HC Gretchen Maloney when asked about her team's performance this weekend.

"Both Sydney and Millie played really well this weekend. Both went undefeated in doubles and singles play, and neither of them lost very many games in either of their doubles or singles matches."

UP NEXT
Up next for Idaho State, they will travel down to Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah for matches with the Big-12's University of Utah on Friday, Feb. 7th, followed by a match at another Big-12 institution, BYU, on Saturday, Feb. 8th.
