GAME RECAP: Idaho State 11, Maine 0
Idaho State shut out Maine 11-0 in five innings to close out the Orange and Black Classic, improving to 15-10 on the season and completing a 5-0 sweep of the home tournament. Goluskin struck out six in four innings of one-hit ball and the Bengal offense scored in the second and third innings to trigger the run rule.
Goluskin set the tone immediately, striking out the side in order in the top of the first inning. The Bengals threatened in the bottom half, with Alyssa Yee drawing a walk and stealing second, but she was called out on an appeal for leaving early and Idaho State could not break through in the opening frame.
The offense came to life in the second inning in decisive fashion. Jenna Kearns doubled to left field to lead off, and after two groundouts moved the inning along, Camryn McDonald dropped a bunt single in front of the plate. A throwing error on the play by Maine second baseman Francesca Guerrera allowed Kearns to score, with McDonald advancing to second on the miscue. Chloe McGreevey then walked, and Yee singled through the right side to score McDonald and move McGreevey to third. McGreevey then stole home to push the lead to three. Ava Brown followed with a double down the left field line, and Sydney Groves doubled to right center for two more RBI, scoring both Yee and Brown. Kira Day capped the inning with a run-scoring triple to right field, bringing home the runner from second to make it 6-0 after two innings.
Maine's pitching change to Kyla Brogan to open the third could not slow the Bengals. Idaho State tacked on five more runs in the frame. Moore singled to short to begin the rally, and after Renay Chavez pinch ran and stole second, McDonald walked and McGreevey reached on an infield single to load the bases. Yee picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, and a subsequent fielding error by catcher Neve Adams allowed two more runs to score. Rebecca Quinn grounded out to score another run, and Day singled to right to bring home the final run of the inning and push the lead to 11-0.
Goluskin navigated Maine's only two-baserunner threat in the second inning without allowing a run, retiring three straight to strand both runners. She worked through a scoreless third and fourth as well, finishing her four innings of work having allowed just one hit with six strikeouts and no walks. Megan Meracle relieved in the fifth, walking one and striking out one while stranding two base runners on errors to complete the shutout and trigger the run rule.
Day finished 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI single, and two RBI. Groves went 1-for-1 with a walk and a two-RBI double. Yee reached base three times with a single and two walks, scoring twice and driving in two. McGreevey reached twice, stole home, and finished with two RBI. Brown doubled and scored twice, and McDonald contributed two hits and a run scored. Goluskin improved to 4-3 on the season.
