Maria Dela Cruz is the ultimate example of the perfect teammate on and off the field.
Dela Cruz was recruited as a goal keeper but has filled many positions on the field.
"Being a team player means knowing your role even if that means not getting substantial minutes," Dela Cruz said. "Being there for my team, being a part of the soccer culture and being your whole self all the time, that's a team player."
The California native's journey to Idaho State began when Head Coach
Allison Gibson offered her a scholarship she says she couldn't turn down. Â
"The best advice I received was don't take anything for granted, take risks and don't be afraid to put everything out there," she said.
Dela Cruz's advice for her younger teammates is to enjoy every minute of every game and practice.
"It goes by so fast," she said. "Yesterday it felt like I was just a freshman."
As her team wraps up the 2014 season the biggest improvement Dela Cruz has seen is the way the Bengals have come together.
"Last year, our team chemistry wasn't as good as it could have been," she said. "This year we have nailed that potential." Â
During her final season at ISU Dela Cruz set a personal goal to be the best leader for her teammates.
"I want to set a good example so all the underclassman can look up to me," Dela Cruz said.
As her final college soccer moments tick away there are many proud memories during her time as a Bengal. Â
"Winning the Big Sky Championship in 2012 was a huge accomplishment," Dela Cruz said. "There was this one game in particular that we scored in the last three seconds, that is also a moment I will never forget."
The most rewarding part of being out on the field has been the relationships that she has built with her teammates.
"Although we get under each other's skin because we are together all the time, they are my support and my sisters," Dela Cruz said. "I would do anything for them and they would do anything for me."
