POCATELLO, Idaho-
The Idaho State men's basketball team  showed a lot of fight against the University of Iowa but it wasn't enough as ISU fell 70-53 on Saturday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Idaho State is 2-4 while Iowa improved to 4-4.

Iowa took a 33-7 lead with 6:18 left in the first half but ISU rallied to come within five at 51-46 with nine minutes left in the game before the Hawkeye's put the game away with a late run.

“I like the fact that we didn't quit and go away like we did at Arizona,” Idaho State coach Joe O'Brien said. “We responded in the second half and had 15-16 minutes of a really good effort. To hold Iowa to shooting in the mid 30's in the second half is good. You just can't shoot yourself in the foot like we did today early.”

Broderick Gilchrest led ISU in scoring with 14 points in 40 minutes of play while Kenny McGowen had 10 points. ISU shot 38.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over 23 times. Abner Moreira had a team-best eight rebounds.

Iowa shot 44 percent and had 37 rebounds for the game.

Trailing 5-2 at the 16:21 mark in the first half, Iowa went on a 28-5 run to take the 33-7 lead with 6:18 to play until halftime. The Bengals trailed 37-19 at halftime. Idaho State turned the ball over 12 times in the first half and shot 33 percent from the field.

“Give Iowa credit,” O'Brien said. “They recognized our struggles offensively early and they put the pressure on us. It got more intense and we couldn't handle it.

The Bengals got within eight points at 48-38 on a 3-point play by Gilchrest with 12:21 to play in the game. Two minutes later a Deividas Busma scored to bring ISU within six at 48-42 with 10:15 to play in the contest.

Mike Lacey later hit two free throws with 9:09 to bring the Bengals within five points at 51-46. Iowa then scored the next four points to extend the lead to nine and Idaho State would get no closer the rest of the way.

Idaho State returns to the court on Tuesday at 8 p.m. when it plays at CSU Bakersfield. The Bengals then host UMKC from the Summit League at Holt Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
