POCATELLO, Idaho –
Sophomore Nate Gross and freshman Diego Cavalcanti captured singles victories in Idaho State's 5-2 loss to Eastern Washington at Reed Gym Sunday afternoon. Gross improved his winning record to 6-2 for the season and 4-2 at the No. 4 position.

“We played a lot better against Eastern Washington than last year,” said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz of Idaho State's 6-1 loss last season. “We are competitive at the No. 4 (Gross) and 5 (Cavalcanti) singles spots but we need to improve at the top end and at No. 6. We're progressing, but it needs to happen sooner.”

Gross won his fifth straight set victory with a 6-3, 7-5 result over Stefan Simikic at the No. 4 position. The Bengal easily dispatched of Simikic in the first set and took a 5-3 lead in the second. Gross had two match points on Simikic's serve with the Bengal up 5-4 in the second set, but he could not close out. He won his third match point three games later.

Cavalcanti has had several close contests this season falling in three super ten-point tie breakers and capturing a three set match victory. However, the freshman broke a three match losing streak with a straight set victory over Kyle Koetje 6-4, 7-5 at the No. five spot.

Junior Dakota Pate was overcome 7-5, 6-3 by Julian Sanchez at the No. 3 spot. Dan Buckingham, a junior, defeated Chad Henninger 7-5 in the first set but was overcome 6-2 in the second set and 10-5 in the tiebreaker.

In doubles, senior Danel Barrenechea and Gilberto Azevedo fell behind by three games before returning the favor to tie the contest. The Bengals trailed by a break until they broke the Eagle's serve taking a 6-5 lead. Barrenechea and G. Azevedo both held service sending the match into a tiebreaker where the Bengals fell 7-4 at the No. 1 spot to Kyle Koetje and Simikic.

Idaho State fell to 0-8 for the season and 0-2 in the Big Sky while the Eagles improved to 5-5 for the season and 2-1 in conference play.

The Bengals next match is at Utah on Wednesday, March 9 at 5 p.m.
