POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team captured its first victory of the season ending a 14 match losing streak dating back to last season. The Bengals swept the College of Idaho 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Juniper Hills Country Club.
ISU improved to 1-9 while the Yotes fell to 0-7 for the season. The last time ISU swept an opponent was against South Dakota State in 2007.
The Bengals swept all three doubles contests to begin the match up 1-0 for ISU's first doubles point of the season.
Dakota Pate and
Diego Cavalcanti defeated Thomas McMahon and Mark Malmstrom 8-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Danel Barrenechea and
Rodrigo Azevedo also captured an 8-1 victory overcoming Jaron Tietsort and Joel Hernandez at the No. 2 position.
Nate Gross and
Colton Pate swept James Collet and Shravan Sriganesh 8-0 at the No. 3 position.
Three Bengals swept their singles contests: Cavalcanti, Gross, and R. Azevedo. Cavalcanti defeated Tietsort at the No. 4 spot while R. Azevedo posted his win at the No. 6 position. Gross improved his singles record to 7-3 for the season and captured his first victory at the No. 3 position defeating McMahon.
Dan Buckingham and R. Azevedo captured their first victories of the season against the College of Idaho. R. Azevedo overcame Sriganesh at the No. 6 position and Buckingham defeated Collet 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot.
The men's next match occurs against Northern Arizona in Phoenix on Monday, March 21 at 11 a.m.
