Men's Tennis Plays at Utah Wednesday

Nate Gross leads the Bengals in singles victories with six

BENGALS IN ACTION THIS WEEK

The Idaho State men's tennis team travels to Salt Lake City to play Utah on Wednesday, March 9 at 5 p.m. at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The two teams have played each of the past eight years with the Utes winning all eight. The Bengals improved last week against Eastern Washington winning two matches from Nate Gross and Diego Cavalcanti.

SERIES INFO AND LAST MEETING WITH THE UTES
Utah leads the series 8-0 over the last eight years. In the last meeting Gross took Dmytro Mamedov into the third set at the No. 5 spot before eventally falling. Sophomore Dan Buckingham pushed Timmy Allin into a tie breaker in the second set before being overcome 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) at the No. 4 position. Utah men are currently ranked #66 while the women are ranked #49.

ABOUT BENGAL MEN
The Bengals are 0-8 for the season but have had competitive matches against Utah State and Weber State. Nate Gross, a sophomore, leads the Bengals with a 6-2 record, coming off win versus Eastern Washington's Stefan Simikic. Senior Danel Barrenechea leads ISU at the No. 1 spot in singles while Nate Gross is the best singles performer with a 6-2 record. In doubles ISU has had three victories all with different teams.

MEN'S SINGLES STANDOUT - GROSS
Gross is ISU's best singles performer with a 6-2 record and is 4-2 at the No. 4 spot. His most recent win was a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Stefan Simikic of Eastern Washington.
His strongest win of the season was a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UC Riverside's Ryan Stanbury. Gross is 1-2 in tiebreakers and 1-0 in third set tiebreakers. He holds a career singles record of 12-9 and a 7-6 career record at the No. 4 spot.

BENGAL MEN POST DOUBLES WINS
ISU has captured three doubles matches this season, two at the No. 3 spot and one at the No. 1 position, but have yet to secure the doubles point. Senior Barrenechea and junior transfer Rodrigo Azevedo teamed up for ISU's first doubles win of the season an 8-6 victory over Ben De Marois and Michael Facey. Colton Pate and Gross teamed up at the No. 3 doubles spot to post their first doubles win of the season overcoming Joe DeGuzman and Josh Lorentzen 8-3. More recently Barrenechea and Gilberto Azevedo defeated Montana State's Fletcher Keyes and Pawel Turzanski 9-8 (7-3) at the Apple Athletic Center in Idaho Falls.

ABOUT BENGAL WOMEN
The Idaho State women's tennis team is 0-3 for the season but nearly topped Eastern Washington, falling in the end 4-3. The Bengals captured victories in the top three positions versus the Eagles. Junior transfer Laura Porras captured her second straight singles victory 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Katharina Marslea defeated Judy Liening 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot. Rilee Moorhead posted her first singles win of the season defeating Caitlin Bampton 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.

WOMEN CAPTURE DOUBLES VICTORY
Junior transfers Porras and Katharina Marsela easily defeated Weber State's Annika Karlsen and Michelle Warwick 8-1 at the No. 2 spot for Idaho State's first doubles win of the season. However the Bengals fell 8-4 at the No. 1 and 8-0 at the No. 3 spot to start the match down 0-1.

BENGALS LOOK TO OVERCOME LOSING STREAK

The Idaho State men look to overcome a 14 match losing streak. The men's last victory was a 6-1 decision over Northern Colorado at Reed Gym. The Idaho State women look to break a four-match losing streak. The women's last victory was a 6-1 win over Portland State at Portland.
