OGDEN, Utah- Idaho State women's tennis dropped a match against Weber State Tuesday in Ogden, Utah 6-1.
The only Bengal point came from freshman
Svenja Tegtmeier's singles victory over Michelle Warwick at the No. 5 position 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles action, Tegtmeier and
Wiebke Boeckmann fell to Kristi Elmer and Thais Kurer at the No. 1 spot 8-5. Sophomore
Marian Tangarife and freshman
Laura Theus were overcome by Carly Lloyd and Nittaya Phonharath at the No. 3 position 8-2. Freshmen
Madelyn Weltzin and
Kasey Bacon took on Weber State's Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick in the No. 2 spot. The match was unfinished as WSU had won the doubles point before the match could be concluded.
Tangarife played a hard match against Nittaya Phonharath in the No. 3 spot but ultimately fell in the third set 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Another close match for the Bengals was between Theus and Weber State's Annika Karlsen in the No. 6 position. The match went to three sets and Theus was defeated 7-6, 9-7, 6-4.
Bacon played her second match in the No. 1 spot. Bacon fell to Weber State's Ashley Tanner 7-5, 6-2. Weltzin slipped to Kristi Elmer in the No. 2 position 6-0, 6-1 while junior
Zamira Vasquez fell to Weber State's Thais Kurer in the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-3.
“The match was not as bad as maybe the score would say,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “We will do better against this team in March. We are playing a lot of freshmen right now and they are still looking for their groove. The new players have a different mentality are still learning how at the collegiate level.”
The Bengals travel to Boise State University to participate in the Boise State Tournament Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9. Idaho State will face Boise State Friday and Idaho Saturday.
