Bengals Claim First Doubles Victory Against Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State men's tennis team claimed its first doubles victory in a 7-0 loss to Utah State on Sunday evening.
 
"Utah State is a nationally ranked team and they played well, but our guys are learning what it takes to become a top program," said Head Coach Mark Rodel. "I think this is setting us up for success in the future. It is setting a tone for where we need to be now and in the future."
 
Juniors Sebastian and William Edin earned the first doubles victory of the 2016 season on the No. 1 court against Utah State's Andrew Nakajima and Luis Lopez. The brothers took the set 6-4 before heading into singles competition.
 
"The Edin brothers played outstanding doubles today," Rodel said. "This was by far the best doubles team they have faced."
 
Freshman Francis Filipovich proved his determination once again by forcing a third set after losing the first 6-2. His 6-4 second set win was the lone set victory for ISU in singles competition. However, Utah State's Andrew Nakajima outlasted Filipovich's comeback to take the match 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
 
The Bengals showed their ability to make adjustments mid-set with only one of the six athletes dropping more games in the second set than the first.
 
"A philosophy I have is if you lose the first set you've got to find a way to improve in the second set," said Rodel. "I believe the guys are starting to buy in. They are starting to make the adjustments and trust in what we are working on."
 
The Bengals return to the courts of Reed Gym for their first conference match-up against Montana State on Feb. 13.
