POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team defeated visiting North Dakota 5-2 Saturday morning at the tennis courts at Reed Gym. The Bengals earned the critical doubles point early and picked up four singles victories to seal the win.
"The girls played really clean today and adjusted well," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "The doubles was solid at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, which enabled us to earn the doubles point early. Getting that doubles points always helps with momentum. It was a great day for Bengal tennis."
In doubles play, freshmen
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Madison Fenske started things off the Idaho State with a 6-1 rout of UND's Alex Revenig and Ella Hassall. Freshmen
Megan Poe and
Melissa Coburn sealed the doubles win with a 6-1 victory over UND's Sophie Allen-Fisher and Preethi Kasilingam, while North Dakota claimed the win at the No. 1 doubles position with a 6-3 win.
In singles play,
Huibre-Mare Botes bested Allen-Fisher in a two-set match at the No. 2 position, posting scores of 6-0, 6-1, while twin sister
Louise-Mare Botes made quick work of Mimi Yunker 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 position. The Bengals also claimed wins at the Nos. 1 and 4 singles positions, while the Fighting Hawks picked up two wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions.
Idaho State improves to 2-0 on the season including 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play. North Dakota dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 1-1 mark in BSC play.
The Bengals return to play Friday, Feb. 3 at Utah State in Logan, Utah.
