LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State women's tennis team battled Utah State Friday afternoon before falling 5-2 to the Aggies.
In doubles play, Utah State (4-1) earned the first win with a 6-0 defeat of Idaho State's (2-1)
Huibre-Mare Botes and
Louise-Mare Botes at the No. 1 doubles position, but a 6-4 win by
Megan Poe and
Melissa Coburn at the No. 2 doubles position put the Bengals in a position to earn the doubles point.
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Madison Fenske battled hard at the No. 3 doubles position before falling in 7-6 (7-1) in a tiebreaker, giving the Aggies the doubles point.
In singles play, ISU earned wins at the No. 4 positing as Coburn bested USU's Ellee Bullock in two sets, 6-0, 6-2, while Cvetkovic defeated Maggie O-Meara in a come-from-behind three-set victory, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position.
Huibre-Mare Botes forced three sets at the No. 3 singles position but was unable to close the third set and fell to Utah State's Monika Van de Vondel 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"Today's match was a nail biter for sure," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "The doubles point was within reach, but Utah State was really tough. All of our singles matches were close, and the girls fought hard. We need to keep getting stronger mentally; this was a great match to prepare for our conference foes."
Idaho State returns to play Feb. 12 as it travels to Boise, Idaho to take on the Broncos of Boise State. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
