Track and Field Announces Hiring of Joe Silvers as Assistant Coach

POCATELLO, Idaho- Joe Silvers has been welcomed back to Idaho State as an assistant track and field coach as announced by Head Coach Hillary Merkley Friday morning.

"I don't think it has hit me yet, what it means to be returning," Silvers said. "I'm really excited though, and looking forward to getting back and seeing some familiar faces."

Silvers will be primarily responsible for the pole vault and jumps while assisting in recruiting efforts.

"He knows the program and has a history here," Merkley said. "He has a lot of ties to ISU and has a passion for the program. He's a team player, and somebody who will work hard, and those are things we need."

The past seven years, Silvers has been working as an assistant track and field coach at the University of North Dakota. Under his watch, the program saw storied success producing three Big Sky Conference Champions and an impressive 15 individual school records.

Silvers also brings a diverse set of skills back to ISU. At UND he was involved in maintaining social media outlets for the program and helping manage equipment and logistics for the team. He also helped the program with community service and fundraising events.

Silvers worked as an assistant coach for two years at ISU after earning his master's degree in athletic administration and coaching in 2010. As ISU's multi-events coach, he led a student-athlete to a USA Jr. National Championship Qualifier. He also served as clinician for the Simplot Games Track and Field Camp.

As a student-athlete at Idaho State, Silvers competed in the pole vault and the decathlon where he recorded multiple top-ten finishes in the conference championships, and was a part of Idaho State's 2006 Big Sky Conference championship team.

"I'm ready to get to know the athletes and get to know who they are as people," Silvers said. "I want to take my knowledge and pair that in a manner with them that works best for their learning style."
