POCATELLO, Idaho- It has been a month since the Idaho State golf team has been able to compete. The long layoff didn't faze the Bengals as they had the programs lowest round score in team history in the opening round of the Bobcat Spring Invitational on Monday at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Bengals are currently tied for fifth in the 11-team tournament after round 1 as the team shot 299. The Bengals are 12 strokes off of the leaders, Gonzaga and California Baptist.
"I am really proud of the work and effort these girls have put in this spring," Idaho State coach
Dallen Atkins said. "They have worked really hard through the indoor practices and weather. But now it is really starting to pay off and show some amazing results for our program."
Tya Seth is tied for fourth place after shooting a 71 in the opening round. The 71 ties Seth's record for her best performance in a round and also ties the record for the second best round in program history. Seth also shot a 71 in round 3 of the 2019 Big Sky Championships. Â
Tyler Erickson and
Lindsey Lloyd shot a 75 while
Ainsley Snyder finished with a 78. Mackenzie Robbins shot an 87 to round out the scoring.
The Bengals are one of six Big Sky schools competing at the Invitational and only Weber State had a better team score (296).
"These ladies actually hit the ball really well today," Atkins said. "We just didn't get some of the short putts to fall like we needed them to fall. But to be in fifth place as a team out of 11 (and not that far out of the top 3), and Tya sitting at tied for fourth overall, I couldn't be more proud of the way they played today."Â
Round 2 begins Tuesday morning.
"One of the things that makes me the most proud about this program though is the fact that even though today we posted our best round ever in program history, we are just scratching the surface to what these girls can do and will do," Atkins said. "We are all ready to get back after it tomorrow and hopefully post an even better score. I know I have said this alot the last few years but watch out for these ladies. They are going to make some noise."Â
