OGDEN, Utah – Ashley VanVleet-Sturgis named Big Sky Conference Champion in the heptathlon alongside
Brianna VanVleet who earned all-conference honors with third place finish Thursday afternoon at Chick Hislop Track and Stewart Stadium in Ogden, Utah.
VanVleet-Sturgis finished the competition with 5,438 points, this is a new personal record for her and puts her third in the Idaho State record books. This also places her 20
th in the nation at the moment.
The women started the day with the long jump and VanVleet-Sturgis jumped 19' 2" which earned her 801 points and a new personal record. She then went on to throw a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 131' 9" for 671 points. She ended the day with the 800 where she ran 2:21.61 for 802 points.
VanVleet also finished day two strong jumping 17' 11 ½" for 691 points. She also threw a personal best in the javelin with a mark of 132' 2" which earned her 673 points. VanVleet finished the 800m bringing in 679 points to secure her third-place finish of 5062 points.
Combined the sisters earned 16 points for the women going into the competition Friday and Saturday.
Kaitlyn Neff earned a personal best in the heptathlon finishing with 4006 points. She improved her personal best in the javelin throwing 84' 11" for 399 points and he personal best in the 800m running a time of 2:41.12 for 560 points.
On the men's side,
Ethan Garrett and Cade Ricks finished just outside of scoring but improved their marks in the decathlon. Ricks earned seven new personal records this weekend and Garrett earned four with his jump in the pole vault of 11' 10" for 511 points.
Ricks improved his pole vault, javelin, and 1500m time Thursday. In the pole vault, he jumped 15' 1 ½" for 793 points his second personal best of the day in this event. He also double PR'd in the javelin throwing 147' 8" for 515 points. Lastly, in the 800m he ran a 4:59.01 for 565 points bring his total to 5750 points. Garrett finished the competition just behind with 5573 points.
