BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team continued its fall schedule at the Barb Chandler Classic, hosted by Boise State at the Appleton Tennis Center. The tournament featured a unique "Dynamic Duo" format that paired teammates in both doubles and singles across three flights of competition. The four-team field included Boise State, Idaho State, Weber State, and Montana State.
Head coach Gretchen Maloney was pleased with the progress her team showed throughout the weekend.
"Overall, we had some really great performances this past weekend. Some close three set matches and I was happy with how the girls made adjustments to figure out a way to win," Maloney said.
Blue Flight
The Bengals had two pairs in the Blue Flight: Millie Day/Emmy Richards and Sydney Morris/Veronika Zarovna.
Day and Richards opened with a doubles win over Boise State before falling in both singles to drop the match, 2-1. They bounced back with a sweep against their Bengal teammates, Morris and Zarovna, winning 8-1 in doubles and adding straight-set singles wins to clinch the 3-0 result. Day and Richards finished the weekend strong with a 2-1 victory over Montana State, highlighted by Day's three-set comeback over Angel Bean (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Richards' 7-5 third-set win over Terezie Stverakova.
Maloney praised their effort:
"Millie and Emmy brought home the second place trophies for their bracket … so proud of how they fought and played consistent to get the win."
Morris and Zarovna picked up their lone victory in Friday's opener against Montana State, where they earned an 8-5 doubles win. Both pushed their singles matches to three sets but ultimately fell to MSU.
Orange Flight
In the Orange Flight, Stefanya Shalakhova and Asem Shoybek faced a tough Boise State draw to open and dropped their first two matches. The senior-junior tandem rebounded on Sunday with a dominant showing against Weber State. Shalakhova and Shoybek won their doubles match 8-4, then followed with straight-set singles victories — Shalakhova 6-7 (11), 6-0, 6-3 over Jessica Hill, and Shoybek 6-1, 6-3 over Naomi Johnson. The sweep marked Idaho State's second 3-0 team win of the weekend.
White Flight
Evelina Zhuk and Victoria Grymalska competed in the White Flight, opening against Boise State's Beldiman/Piron. The Bengals dropped the opener but bounced back Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Weber State. Zhuk and Grymalska claimed the doubles point in a tiebreak, 8-7 (4), before Zhuk rolled to a 6-4, 6-3 singles win.
On Sunday, the pair closed the tournament against Montana State. Zhuk fell in straight sets, but Grymalska responded with her best match of the weekend, defeating Lola Bean 6-1, 6-1 to secure her first singles win of the fall.
Maloney noted the challenge of the event's top competition:
"Boise State was really solid this year and they always push us."
