POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State football team kicks off the 2018 season with its home opener on Friday, August 31 vs. Western State. Kickoff is at 6:35 p.m. in Holt Arena and Jerry Miller and Mark Liptak will call the action live on 102.5 KMGI. Live stats, audio and video are also available through isubengals.com.  Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game.

About Western State
Last season Western State finished 1-10 with its lone win being 26-16 over New Mexico Highlands. Western State was picked 10th in  in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Series vs. Western State
Idaho State leads the series 20-7-1. In 2011, ISU beat the Mountaineers 44-7 in Holt Arena and in 2013, ISU beat Western State 29-3. Prior to 2011 the teams met 26 times between 1931 and 1962.

Bengals vs. Non Division I Teams
Since 1999, ISU is 20-1 vs. non-Division I teams. The Bengals only loss was 33-22 to Central Washington in 2009.

New Coaches in 2018
Michael Ferriter returned to Idaho State in the spring of 2018 as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He was the wide receivers coach at ISU from 2012 to 2014 before going to Montana in 2015.

Roman Sapolu joined the team as the offensive line coach and Jay Staggs was hired to coach the safties. Roger Cooper was promoted to defensive coordinator.

Recapping 2017
- Idaho State's 30-28 win over Nevada on Sept. 16 snapped a 27-game losing streak against FBS schools.
- Four wins was the most since the 2014 team went 8-4 and the second most since 2005 (5-6).
- James Madison, Mitch Gueller, Skyler Phillips and Mario Jenkins earned first-team all-conference.
- 1,962 rushing yards is the most since the 2014 team rushed for 2,567 and the third most since the 1996 team rushed for 1,996 yards.
- 19 rushing touchdowns was the fifth most in an ISU single-season.
- Adkin Aguirre had seven tackles or more in eight games and tallied seven turnovers (5 INT and 2 fumble recoveries)
- Michael Dean had a touchdown in seven of the 11 games. He had three 100 plus yard receiving games with a career-high 133 at Nevada.
- Ty Flanagan had a rushing touchdown in 9 of 11 games with a career-high of four vs. Portland State. He rushed for 100 yards or more in three games with a career-high of  108 vs. Portland State.
- Mitch Gueller had four 100 yard receiving games with a career-high of 195 vs. Portland State. He scored his eight touchdowns in a five-game span.
- Tanner Gueller threw a touchdown pass in every game but one (UC Davis). He threw three touchdowns in a game five times with a school record long of 97 vs. Portland State.
- Parker Johnson was 7-8 on field goals with a career-long of 40. He was 21-23 on extra points. His only two misses came at Northern Colorado.
- Joe Martin had five double digit tackle games before suffering a season-ending injury at Sacramento State.  He had 20 tackles at Utah State and 14 vs. Cal Poly.
- Brian Fineanganofo has made 18 straight starts on the offensive line. Jacob Molenaar started every game last year.

Did you Know
- ISU finished with a home record of 3-2 in 2017. In 2013 ISU was 3-3 at home and in 2014 the Bengals were 6-0 at Holt.

Returning Skill Players
Plenty of experience returns on the offense in 2018.  The running back position is led by 2017 first-team all-conference member James Madison. Last season he carried the ball 185 times for 933 yards and five touchdowns. Ty Flanagan, who earned honorable mention all-conference rushed for 634 yards on 11 touchdowns and 125 carries.

The receiver position is led by juniors Michael Dean, who had 52 receptions for 754 yards and eight touchdowns and Mitch Gueller. Gueller finished with 36 receptions on 871 yards and eight touchdowns.

Of the 4,784 yards of total offense in 2017, 4,215 of those yards return for the 2018 season.

Big Play Bengals
Last year Idaho State showed a knack for making big plays. The Bengal offense had 94 plays of 10-19 yards; 33 plays of 20-29 yards, 16 plays of 30-39 yards; 5 plays of 40-49 yards and 7 plays of 50 yards or more.
