Bengals Wrap Up Season at NCAA West First Round

Meet Results

POCATELLO, Idaho
– Idaho State Track and Field wrapped up the 2024 Track and Field season at the NCAA West Region First Round Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas this weekend.

Brielle Davis, Sarah Wilensky and Axel Tirado Sanchez all competed for the Bengals at the meet and end the season top-50 the the NCAA DI West Region

Director of Track and Field Hillary Merkley shared her Thoughts from the meet.

"I'm proud of our coaches and athletes this weekend."

The meet started with the women's hammer throw. On her second attempt of the Day, Wilensky threw 53.22 (174-7), earning her 43rd In the west.

"It was great that Sarah was able to get an opportunity to compete at this meet and level," said Merkley. "It's a rare opportunity and the NCAA talent is continuing to be extremely competitive. Sarah came in as a High Jumper and injuries after her freshmen year were going to sideline her in that event so we went a different route and she embraced it the last few years and worked diligently in a new area. Then to make it to this meet is quite an accomplishment and she should leave feeling very proud of her career.

Later that afternoon, Brielle Davis competed strong in the women's pole vault. Davis finished 25th in the Region as she cleared 4.10m (13-5.25), her third height cleared of the competition.

"Brielle had her first taste of a major meet and she handled the pressure and had a great first showing," said Merkley. "She's getting more experience and she's getting more and more consistent at those higher heights. This was a great start for her."

The meet wrapped up with Axel Tirado-Sanchez In the discus. On his first attempt of the day, the Bengal threw his meet-best distance of 52.93m (173-8). Tirado-Sanchez finished in 33rd place in the West.

"This is Axel's 3rd appearance at this meet and that in and of itself shows his talent and abilities," remarked Merkley. "He is a tough competitor. He adjusts to situations and you can always count on him to give it his all no matter the circumstances. I know he wants more and isn't satisfied with his successes. That's what pushes him to keep growing. He hasn't had things easy and though that is not always fair he continually is taking things as they come and looking for how to move forward towards what he deserves and wants to accomplish."

"I'm proud of the athletes and coaches! Sarah is headed to a new job working in strength and conditioning and her experiences will help her help other athletes who work towards their own goals. Axel and Brielle have their sights on the future. Im glad we get more time to see them grow. They aren't finished yet."
