BOISE, Idaho – The Bengals women's tennis team played two matches in Boise, Idaho on Friday and Saturday of this week. The first match was on Friday vs the hosts, Boise State University, and the second match on Saturday, was against the Lewis-Clark State College Warriors.
Picking up in the doubles matches in the Bengals' match vs Boise State, the first duo to wrap up their match for ISU was
Asem Shoybek and
Stefanya Shalakhova playing in the #1 doubles spot, falling to Safarova/Dutta, 1-6. In the #3 doubles match was
Olivia Mikkelson and
Victoria Grymalska who fell to Schaefer/Shah 2-6. As BSU claimed the doubles point,
Sydney Morris and Millie day were looking to slavage a moral victory for the Bengals in the #2 doubles match, however, the Bengal duo would fall to Marruffo/Kershner in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (6-8).
As the Bengals looked to spark a comeback in singles play, they could not get it going. As each Bengal would fall in straight sets to their opponent.
Sydney Morris would fair the best out of any ISU player in the #4 singles match, falling to P. Schaefer 5-7, 3-6. Boise State would sweep the Bengals with a final score of 0-7.
Idaho State would look to bounce bac the following morning, taking on Lewis-Clark State Saturday morning.
The Bengals came out of the gates strong in this one, as they swept the Warriors in the doubles matches,
Asem Shoybek and
Stefanya Shalakhova got a 6-1 win in the #1 doubles match,
Sydney Morris and
Millie Day earned a 6-1 win as well, in the #2 doubles spot, and
Olivia Mikkelson and
Victoria Grymalska would defeat Govea/Shah in the #3 doubles match, 6-2.
In singles play the Bengals looked dominant. Led by
Asem Shoybek and
Stefanya Shalakhova in the #1 and #2 spots, Shoybek would earn a 6-3, 6-3 win, and Shalakhova would earn a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Millie Day would take care of business in the #3 singles match for her first career singles victory, vs. N. Montero, 6-1, 6-0, and
Sydney Morris would have a similar outcome over P. Noble-Lucas in the #6 singles match, 6-0, 6-2. In the #5 singles match
Victoria Grymalska earned her first collegiate singles win, defeating G. Heim 6-3, 6-2. The final Bengal to play in singles was
Erin Maguire in the #4 singles match, who would also get her first career NCAA win, downing B. Lambru, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). The Bengals would go on to sweep the Warriors, 7-0.
Following their opening weekend split, the Bengals begin their 2025 campaign with a 1-1 record.
"It is so great to get going again and get into our dual match season", said Head Coach,
Gretchen Maloney.
"Boise State was tough, but I feel like we did some things pretty well. Our effort and attitude was good. We identified areas that we really need to continue to work on.
Against Lewis-Clark State, we were able to play a little more relaxed and stick with our game plans.
We have a pretty new team and it's really exciting to watch them compete."

The Bengals will be at home next weekend for their first home matches of the season. Their first will be on Saturday, February 1
st at 2 PM vs Colorado Mesa University, and the second will be Sunday, February 2
nd at 9 AM, also against Colorado Mesa University.
